1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is provisional. While it clearly belongs to the word family around the verb /izzi(ya)-(di)/ ‘to do, make’, its morphological structure is partly opaque for a lack of comparable forms (pace Hawkins 2000a:267), cf. the discussion of the stem below. Rieken 2007b:265 suggests the shape /izzitran=za/ for the attested spelling.

1.1.4Meaning

Since the word is a member of the word family around the verb /izzi(ya)-(di)/ ‘to do, make’, its basic meaning is reasonably clear, cf. the recent investigation of the word family by Yakubovich 2020a. Hawkins 2000a:266 first suggested ‘performance’, but since the context continues with what appear to be items for some sort of ceremony, a meaning such as ‘offering’ vel sim. is more likely, see Rieken 2007b:265 who suggests ‘item(s) needed for the ritual’. MARAŞ 14, §7 runs: a-wa/i [z]a-a-ti-i Iá-sa-ti-wa/i-su-sá-na (“STATUA”)ta-ru-ti za-a i-zi-i-ia-tara/i-za-a sa-tu, approx. /a=wa zatti Astiwasussan tarudi izziyad(ar)ran=za astu/, meaning ‘Let there be this offering to this statue of Astiwasu: (three breads …)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:266f.).

1.1.5Stem

The attested neuter particle /-za/ proves its grammatical gender, but the stem formation of this word has seen various analyses from scholars. Hawkins 2000a:267 suggests an abstract in /-ttar/,But he lists it as /iziyattara-/ in the glossary on p. 627. which is possible, but unlikely. More probable is the analysis put forward by Rieken 2007b:265, who proposes an instrument noun in *-tro-, later /-d(ar)ra-/.
