3sg. pret. ind. act. xssaθrapazate N 320.1 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The false reading †xssaθrapawate found in Laroche 1974a:116 and Schmitt 1976a:378 with the letter instead of in the suffix has been corrected in Laroche 1979c:5 n. 1.

Regarding the vacillation between d and θ (cf. xssadrapa- : xssaθrapaza-), Schmitt 1976a:378f. compares Iranian personal names in Lycian transmission, e.g. Miθrapata- vs. Mihrapata-, Umrgga- vs. Humrxxa-, consistently showing spelling variants.

1.1.4Meaning

In the trilingual inscription of the Letoon, the verb xssaθrapazate (N 320.1) is rendered with Greek Λυκίας ξαδράπης ἐγένετο ‘he became Satrap of Lycia’. As opposed to the Greek construction, the verb in the Lycian version is used transitively and takes trm̃misñ ‘Lycia’ as its direct object (Laroche 1979c:60), i.e. ‘he ruled over Lycia as Satrap’; cf. Heubeck 1981a:158, DLL:85, Neumann 2007a:133f.

1.1.5Stem

The verb xssaθrapaza-(ti) is a factitive (Melchert 1992b:48) derived from an unattested noun *xssaθrapaza-, which is rebuilt form of xssadrapa- with the productive “professional” suffix -aza- (with Laroche 1979c:60, contra Neumann 2007a:133f.).
