1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv.*  ̶  The reading ma-aš-ta-i-me-en-zi (KUB 12.1. iii 34’ with ma- instead of ba-) by Košak 1978a:109 is outdated (see HEG P:525 and CHD P:210). – For the significance of the spelling with the sign BA, see under the lemma head bašta-.

[E.R.]

1.1.4Meaning

The lexeme is used to describe textiles listed in inventory texts (see Košak 1982a and Siegelová 1986a for the contexts). CHD P:210 (followed by Ünal 2007a:532) offers the meanings ‘trimmed (?)’, ‘filigreed (?)’ and ‘embroidered (?)’, based on the parallel participial use of baštaimma/i- and the Akkadogram MAŠLU (verbal adjective of mašālu ‘to trim’) in Hittite context. Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:218 follow CHD P:210, but suggest a more generic meaning (see also bašta-) like ‘decorated’.Outdated are the following interpretations: ‘a bandage or girdle’ in HW:139, ‘woven’ by Kronasser 1966a:219 and Košak 1978a:109, ‘decorated with wickerwork’ in HHw:127, as well as ‘decorated with strips (?)’ proposed by Melchert (CLL:172); undecided Siegelová 1986a:611.

1.1.5Stem

The lexeme can be analysed as an i-mutating possessive adjective in -aimma/i-, vis-à-vis the formation baštant- with the Hittite possessive suffix -ant- (DCL:s.v.), or as a participle via an unattested denominal verb (for the latter alternative, see DLL:70, HHw:127, HEG P:524, HED PA:192f., Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:217). In either case, the base noun is bašta-.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin of baštaima/i- is guaranteed by the Luwian suffix -aimma/i- (see also DLL:70, CLL:172, van den Hout 2006a:249, HHw:127, HEG P:524, HED PA:192f., Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:217-219), but for the borrowing of its base word bašta- from Akkadian, see under the Lemma doppelter Glossenkeilpašta-.
