1.1.3Meaning
The Lycian agent noun asaxlazu refers to a title granting a certain power over the city of Xanthos and is translated with Greek ἐπιμελητὴν ‘curator, governor’ in the trilingual inscription (Laroche 1979c:62, 99, 119, Carruba 1977a:283f., Carruba 1993c:18, Schürr 1998a:152, Melchert in DLL:6, Neumann 2007a:27, Serangeli 2015b:166).The Aramean version does not contain the sentence in which asaxlazu is used.

1.1.4Stem
The Lycian suffix -aza- in asaxlaza-, which is productive building professional terms, was readily recognized (Laroche 1979c:62, 99, 119, Carruba 1977a:283f.). Carruba (ibid.) posits that asaxlaza- has been derived from *asa-ha-xlaza- (cf. haxlaza-) with the loss of intervocalic -h-, which is not impossible, but quite unnecessary. It is more straightforward to assume two univerbations with separate preverbs, i.e. in the first case with ese (+ vowel harmony). It has also been convincingly connected to the Lycian verb xal-(ti) ‘X’ (and xla(i)-(di)), which would make the formation in -aza- deverbal in this case (Schürr 1998a:152, Melchert in DLL:6, Schürr 2009a:168, Serangeli 2015b:166; cf. Carruba 1977a:284 n. 17 comparing Hitt. LÚḫaliyattalla- c. ‘guard’).
