3sg. impv. act. /payaTu/ (PES2.PES2)pa-ia-tú KARKAMIŠ A1a, §33 (Karkamiš)

The attestation at KARKAMIŠ A1a, §33 is curious in that the two logograms are placed around, viz. one above and one below, the first syllabic sign, cf. the remarks on this by Hawkins 2000a:91 and Yakubovich 2016a:72.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably secure. It is likely cognate with Hittite peye/a-(mi) ‘to send’, as per Yakubovich 2016a:72f. As also noted by Yakubovich, it is unlikely that the present word represents a variant of the verb /piya-(i)/ ‘to give’, because the logographic determinative (sign *95, a de facto doubling of *93 ), which suggests semantics from the domain of motion, whereas /piya-(i)/ ‘to give’ relies on the logogram (*66), cf. the discussion of the meaning below. Because of the use of a variant of , it is possible that the word belongs to the word family around /pa-/ ‘to go’, cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning assignment is proposed by Yakubovich 2016a:72f., adducing the likely cognate Hittite peye/a-(mi) ‘to send’. The proposed meaning fits well into the context at KARKAMIŠ A1a, §33: *a-wa-tú (PANIS)tú+ra/i-pi-na (LIBARE)sa5+ra/i-la-ta-za-ha (PES2.PES2)pa-ia-tú, approx. /a=wa=du turpin sarlattan=za=ha payaTu/, meaning ‘(He who is “of bread”), he shall send bread and offering to it (scil. the aforementioned statue)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:89).

1.1.5Stem

Yakubovich 2016a:73f. notes the possibility that the verb may be cognate with /pa-/ ‘to go’. Even so, the precise formation of the stem remains opaque for a lack of further textual evidence. The word may belong to the stem classes in /-a-(ti)/, /-a(i)-(di)/ or /-iya-(i)/, depending on what derivational basis is assumed, cf. Sasseville 2021a:19-21, 80-82, 96f., 401-405.
