1.1.4Meaning

Laroche’s semantic elucidation of ipalāt(i)- ‘sinisterness’ by equation with Hitt. gùb-latar ‘sinisterness’ took place together with that of its base ipal(i)- ‘left (hand)’, see there for the contexts and references.

1.1.5Stem

The recognition of the abstract suffix -t(i)- in ipalāt(i)- goes back to Laroche 1958a:103. The plene writing of -ā- before the suffix and the lenition of its initial plosive may point to an intermediate step in the derivational chain, hence adj. ipal(i)- → collective noun(?) *ipalā-ipalāt(i)-.

[E.R.]

For the lemma head see CLuw. *ip(a)-.
