1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The reading [ḫa]r-pu-na-aš!-⸢ši⸣-n=a at KBo 26.129 iv 9’ follows HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:340. – The restoration of ḫar-pu-na-aš-[ši-in] at KBo 54.150, 13’ is based on the duplicate KBo 64.163 iv 27’ (see Neu 1977a:275, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:340). – The attestation at KBo 26.129 iv 9’ is less than assured.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The first sign ḪAR can be read as ḫar (more frequent) or ḫur (less frequent).
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
The determinative ninda identifies the lexeme as a word for a type of bread or pastry (HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:340, Neu 1977a:275. If NINDAḫarpunaššiš should be related to ḫarp(i)- ‘heap, pile, piling up, harvest’, it would denote a more specific kind of bread such as ‘(bread) of/for piling up/harvest’, but the fragmentary context is inconclusive, and the interpretation hence remains speculative. The ambiguous reading of the first sign adds to the uncertainty.Cf. also Hitt. NINDAḫarpana- listed in HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:337, contra the alleged stem NINDAḫarpanušša- as cited in HED H:181f.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
NINDAḫarpunašša/i- appears to be transparent regarding the stem formation. The genitival suffix -ašša/i- is attached to a stem *ḫarpun- or directly to the infinitive *ḫarpuna, presupposing a verb derived from a root- with the shape *ḫarp-, which may or may not be identical with that of ḫarp(i)- ‘heap’.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
As pointed out by Melchert (DCL:s.v.), the stem formation indicates a borrowing from Luwian, whereas the root is ambiguous regarding its origin.
