1.1.2Forms

inf. aladehxxãne TL 57.5 (Antiphellos)

The other attestation adduced at TL 112.4 by Friedrich 1932a:82, who read it as alade[h]x[ãne] (followed by Melchert in DLL:3, Hajnal 1995a:117 n. 130, Oreshko 2019a:101 n. 39), does not exist; see Christiansen 2020a:242.

1.1.3Meaning

Hajnal 1995a:117 n. 130 claims that aladehxxa- has a meaning different from ala(de)ha-(di), since aladehxxãne in TL 57 takes a tomb as its direct object. Melchert (DLL:3) translates it with ‘to prepare for laying out’ (cf. Melchert 2015c:157, 160 “to have/make transferred”), whereas Christiansen 2020a:223f. translates it with ‘to make ready for allocation (?)’ (followed by Sasseville 2021a:46f.; and see already Serangeli 2019a:233 “für eine Zuordnung bereit machen”), which is here tentatively adopted.

1.1.4Stem

Eichner 1993b:239 n. 15 interprets the -xx- in aladehxxa- as reflecting the Hittite factitive suffix -aḫḫ-(i). Melchert 2015c:160f. elaborates on the morphological analysis and posits a new Lycian factitive in -a-(ti) derived from a non-attested action noun *aladehxxa- c. (cf. Lyc. B mrssxa- c.), which is in turn derived from an old factitive in *hax- (derived from a root noun *ha-, as further specified by Sasseville 2021a:47; contra Oreshko 2019a:103-105 with impossible morphological and syntactic analyses). A more economical solution, however, would be to assume an old action noun *haxa- (< *soh2-éh2-), which would have been built when the root-final laryngeal was still present, and which would serve as the basis of our factitive aladehxxa-. This has the advantage of getting rid of the awkward double factitive derivations and proves that the root-final laryngeal was not *h1, but rather *h2; see the lemma head ha-(ti) under Reconstruction.
