1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional. The sign 〈sà〉 (*104) can be found to represent word-initial consonant clusters with a number of HLuw. words (cf. e.g. /skalda-(i)/ ‘to scratch’), and it is hence possible that the present word should be assumed to begin with a similar cluster, viz. /smay(a)-/. However, without identified cognates also in the other Anatolian languages, this suggestion remains hypothetical. In earlier inscriptions, the sign 〈sà〉 (*104) is typically used to represent the palatal sibilant /ʃ/ (see Rieken 2010b:658f.), but again, it is not clear if the same should be assumed for this late attested word. The word may be cognate with the noun HLuw. /sas(a)-/ ‘seal’ and hence Hittite šāi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to press, seal; to shoot’, cf. e.g. Rieken 2010b:658.

Outdated is the link with the family around the verb HLuw. /sa-(i)/ ‘to release’ considered by Hawkins 2000a:479f.; cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

With the word a hapax, the meaning is assigned tentatively and on the assumption that the link with /sas(a)-/ ‘seal’ is valid. The context at BOHÇA, §5 reads: wa/i-mu za-ri+i sà-ma-ia (“ANIMA.BESTIA”)hwa/i-sa5+ra/i pi-pa-sa-ia, approx. /wa=mu zadi smaya hwisara pibassaya/, meaning ‘Here, he (scil. the aforementioned god) grants to me the trapped (?) beasts’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:479).

1.1.5Stem

The word appears to be an adjective in /-i(ya)-/ deriving from an otherwise unattested base */s(a)ma-/ with the preserved stem-final /a/. The derivational base may belong to the word family around /sas(a)-/ ‘seal’, but further evidence is needed.
