1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. /…/ *308-mi-sa ASSUR letter e, §26 (Assur)

The attestation at ASSUR letter e, §26 constitutes the first word of the clause and hosts a string of clitics: 〈-ha-wa/i-mu-i〉, i.e. /=ha=wa=mu/ ‘and to/for me’ with the quotative particle intervening.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Unclear. The word appears to have a stem ending in /°mis-/, but the sign *308 has so far remained uninterpreted either as a logogram or a syllabogram or both. It occurs twice more in two further lexemes that are otherwise rather more frequently attested without it, viz. /as-/ ‘to be’ (at TÜNP 2, l. 2) and /tanu(wa)-(i)/ ‘to set up’ (at KARKAMIŠ A18j). Its shape resembles a spearhead standing on point.

1.1.4Meaning

The word is part of a semantically opaque clause at ASSUR letter e, §26: *308-mi-sa-ha-wa/i-mu-i (*351.*406)ia-sa5+ra/i-za, approx. /…-mis=sa=za=wa=mu iyassarazza/, remaining without translation beyond ‘To me you shall iyassarazza- a/the *308-mis-!’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:536) since the meanings of both the noun and the verb are unknown. As the verb is a 2sg. impv. act., the noun is most likely the object of the clause.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The context of attestation shows the word to be a nom./acc. sg. of a neuter noun with the neuter particle /=sa/ visible. It appears to be a stem in /-is-/ (for which see Melchert 2003b:198), although a stem in /-id-/ should not be entirely discarded without evidence to the contrary because of the sweeping loss of final stops; cf. Melchert 2003b:184.
