1.1.2Forms
| gen. adj. gen. pl. | ḫu-ur-pa-na-aš-ši-a[š] | KBo 64.15 ii 2 | (CTH 433, NS) |
The reading follows DCL:s.v. However, Melchert’s analysis of the syntagm ḪUR.SAG-aš ḫu-ur-pa-na-aš-ši-a[š] ‘in/for the ḫ. mountains’ as dat./loc. pl. does not conform with the other accusative forms in the list following the present item. Accordingly, the two words are interpreted as Hittite plural genitives, which must be governed by another accusative form. Alternatively, one could consider an acc. pl. ḫu-ur-pa-na-aš-ši-u[š] ‘the ḫ. of the mountains’, but that would leave the relational suffix -ašša/i- without any recognizable function.

1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. If the derivation proposed under Meaning is correct, the singleton -n- constitutes a defective spelling for geminate -nn- in GIŠḫuwarpann(i)-. Also, -u- corresponds to the diphthong -uwa- of the (shorter) base word.
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
The adjective is used as an epithet of the mountains. Melchert (DCL:s.v.) points to a possible relationship with CLuw. GIŠḫuwarpann(i)-, which is interpreted as ‘foliage’ here. If ḫurpanašša/i- derives from GIŠḫuwarpann(i)-, its meaning can be identified as ‘related to foliage’, a suitable epithet for mountains, especially in view of the frequent collocation of mountains and laḫḫurnuzzi- ‘foliage’ in Hittite (see CHD L-N:15f.).

1.1.5Stem
For the suffixal chain ḫu(wa)rp- + -ann(i)- + -ašša/i-, see under Meaning.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
The fragment on which the attestation is found was published only in 2015, which is why it is not mentioned in any of the lists of Luwian words in Hittite. Only Melchert (DCL:s.v.) observed the two Luwian -ašša/i- derivatives ḫurpanašša/i- ‘related to foliage’ and ḫapašša/i- ‘related to a river’ (ibid. ii 6).
