1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Contra Starke 1985b:346, the reading of word-final -n[i] is more likely, since the first Winkelhaken is positioned above the horizontal wedge as expected for NI, contrasting with its position in NA, as seen in KUB 25.37 ii 31’ on the same tablet.

1.1.4Meaning
Although Meriggi 1957a:201 n. 22 did not fully understand the context of GIŠḫuwarpann(i)-, he translated the noun as ‘foliage’ based on an assumed connection with Hitt.
ḫurpašta(n)- ‘leaf, peal’. He is tentatively followed in HEG A-K:332, whereas other scholars mention the putative match ḫurpašta(n)-, yet do not use it for the semantic elucidation of GIŠḫuwarpann(i)- (CLL:81, HED H:406, DCL:s.v.; without any comment or translation HHw:58, Sasseville 2021a:84). However, the context ((3’)GIŠḫuwarpanni (4’)[ ]x arunaindu kuwanzinzi dingirMEŠ-zi ‘Let them, the weighty gods, raise the [ ] towards the ḫuwarpann(i)-!’, see Sasseville 2021a:84) supports Meriggi’s translation ‘foliage’, since foliage is typically found higher up in trees. Moreover, Hitt. GIŠhuwarpi- c. and GIŠhuwarpiš- n. (a plant or part of a plant) feature the diphthongization of -ur- > -uwar-, as well. A connection with
ḪARpušta- ‘medium-sized hollow for offerings (?)’ can be excluded on semantic grounds.

1.1.5Stem
The lexeme ends in the suffix -ann(i)-. For reasons of economy, the base of the derivative is most likely the match of Hitt. GIŠḫuwarpi- c. ‘(a plant or part of a plant)’, i.e. CLuw. *ḫuwarp(i)-.
