1.1.3Meaning
The word šitarfλos is used as a predicate in a nominal sentence modifying the noun mršlas (Vetter 1959a:42f.), here translated as ‘violator (?)’. The word šitarfλo- has been analyzed as containing the preverb ši- of obscure meaning (cf. Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 106, Vetter 1959a:41, Gusmani 1964a:195, Schürr 2000c:170 n. 5). Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 106 has also posited a root tarf-, which he equated with the root tarp- (followed by Gusmani 1965a:206 n. 16), although both should a priori be kept separate on phonological grounds. The meaning ‘possess(ing)’ for šitarfλo- based on an etymological connection with the Lydian root tarp-, previously translated as ‘to possess’ (Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 106, Vetter 1959a:41), is outdated. No meaning is suggested here.

The formation in -λo- is considered obscure here, although one should compare the similar looking Lyd. ẽntarfλo- and the historical explanation from a Luwian perspective offered in Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:219f.
