1.1.3Meaning
The context in which the word karftos is found is obscure and fragmentary. Meriggi 1936a:284 suggests the meaning ‘trusted’, which is a mere guess. No alternative interpretation can be offered; cf. Gusmani 1964a:143. Meriggi 1935a:114 n. 109 and Gusmani 1964a:143 connect the root karf- in karftos with karp- in šawkarplo- ‘(a title)’ and with korf- in korfi-(d). While the issue regarding the root-final -p-/-f- with the former is small, an explanation for the -a-/-o- alternance vis-à-vis the second cognate is missing.

1.1.4Stem
karfto- can be interpreted as an agent noun in -to- derived from a root verb karf-. On the suffix -to-, see Sasseville 2021a:182.
