annalla/i-

‘former, ealier, old’

1.1.1Transmission

The lexeme is found in a broad range of genres, such as festival and ritual texts, oracle reports, cult inventories, letters, and myths. It occurs sporadically in MS manuscripts, but mostly in NS texts. More attestations are listed in HED A, E, I:52-54 and HW 2nd ed. A:74-76.

The assignment of an-na-al-la at KUB 33.106 iii 50’ has long been discussed, whether it belongs to the present lemma or to a putative annalla/i- ‘maternal’ (see under †annalla/i-, with references).

1.1.4Meaning

The semantic interpretation goes back to Götze 1928a:138 (without argument). In view of the clear contexts, for which see HED A, E, I:52-54, the translation is fully accepted in the dictionaries (HW:21, HEG A-K:25, HW 2nd ed. A:74, HED A, E, I:52-54, HHw:15, Ünal 2007a:26, EDHIL:173). In several contexts, annalla/i- replaces Hitt. karūili- ‘old, ancient’ (see most recently Goedegebuure 2014a:216f.).A “volksetymolog. Verbindung mit anna- ‘Mutter’ ..., die das Vordringen von annalli/a- (annaz) in ein besetztes Wortfeld gefördert haben dürfte” (HW 2nd ed. A:74, followed in HEG A-K:25) is not impossible, but unproven.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

The stem alternates between an a- and an i-stem, which is not untypical for stems with l-suffixes (Götze 1928a:138f., Kronasser 1966a:247, HEG A-K:25), particularly in Luwian borrowings. Clearly, the lexeme represents a derivative in Luw. -alla/i-, although confusion with Hitt. -āla- may have played a role for the frequency of the a-stem forms (HED A, E, I:52-54, Rieken 1994a:50 with n. 31). Apart from the disputed attestation of annalla at KUB 33.106 iii 50’ (see under Forms), the link of annalla/i- with anna/i- ‘that yonder’ (instead of anna- ‘mother’) is met with broad acceptance; cf. Hrozný 1917a:135 n. 2, Kronasser 1966a:211, van Brock 1962a:90f. (with references to the earlier opposing view), HED A, E, I:52-54, EDHIL:173, Melchert 2009a:151, Goedegebuure 2014a:218, DCL:s.v.).

1.1.6Origin

On account of the Luwian base anna/i- and the suffix Luwian -alla/i-, the Luwian origin of annalla/i- ‘former, earlier, old’ is claimed by Rieken 1994a:50 n. 31, EDHIL:173, Goedegebuure 2014a:218 (see also HHw:15, classification as loan word without specification of the donor language in HW 2nd ed. A:74; unclear HED A, E, I:53f.).
