For the grammatical assignment of all attestations of wuú-la-ši-na-aš as nominative singular see under Meaning. Contra Carruba 1970a:79, the ending -a in wuú-la-a-ši-na (KUB 35.165 obv. 8’, IBoT 2.36 obv. 5) is not the locative ending, but rather nom./acc. collective. Moreover, the enclitic particle =anta does not mean ‘in’; see under lemma.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz. For the attestation KUB 35.165 obv. 15’, there is definitely a sign <a> before the sign <ši> (with Carruba 1970a:15, differently Carruba 1972a:12) and traces of the beginning of the sign <la> can be seen on the photograph of the Konkordanz.

1.1.4Meaning

Laroche 1955a:74-78 offers a contextual interpretation of the lexeme p/wulāšina- in KUB 35.165. As shown by his analysis, it designates something that the god Ziparwa is invited to eat. Furthermore, there are different kinds of p/wulāšina- that lie on the table. In two cases, it is modified by wišta-, which Laroche compares to Hitt. NINDA wištaš (a kind of bread). Therefore, Laroche conludes that Pal. p/wulāšina- equates the logogram NINDA ‘bread’ and he assumes a loanword from Hattic pu/wulašne ‘bread’ (followed by Kammenhuber 1955b:364 n. 1, Carruba 1970a:79, Starke 1990a:73). Differently, Eichner 2010a:46 interprets wuú-la-ši-na-aš as dative/locative plural (likewise Carruba 1972a:29, Kammenhuber 1959a:18) and suggests that Pal. p/wulāšina- means ‘cake base’ (NHG. Tortenboden), thus referring to the place, where the wišta-(bread) lies. Based on the comparison between Hitt. NINDA wištaš and  Pal. wištaš p/wulāšinaš, it is simpler to stay with the meaning ‘bread’ for p/wulāšinaš. It is also more economical to posit that the priest is simply describing the different types of bread lying on the table for the deity, rather than adding a description of the layers of a pastry.

1.1.6Origin

The Palaic lexeme p/wulāšina- is borrowed from Hattic p/wulašne ‘bread’ (Laroche 1955a:74-78, Kammenhuber 1959a:20, Carruba 1970a:79, Soysal 2004b:149, HEG W-Z:762). The “vowel subscript” after the sign <wa>, i.e. <wuú> and the vacillation between <wuú> and <pu> have been taken as further indications for a Hattic origin (Kammenhuber 1955b:364 n. 1), which has however become questionable as a criterion.
