With gloss wedges, the verb is attested only once in an Akkadian medical omen text.

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pres. act. doppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i KUB 37.193 obv. 2’ (CTH 537, NS)

On account of the alleged 2sg. impv. i-te-eb ‘get up!’ preceding doppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i, the latter was likewise interpreted as a 2sg. impv. act. (DLL:94, Oettinger 1979a:383f., CLL:217; skeptical HEG T:226). However, this does not fit the context of an omen protasis. Therefore, Wilhelm 1994a:21 suggested an emendation of the Akkadian form as i-te-eb-bi〉 ‘he gets up’. Accordingly, doppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i can be analyzed as a 3sg. pres. act. form, too.

1.1.4Meaning

No attempt at a translation of the verb has been offered after its separation from tarš(a)i-(di) and tarši-(ti) (Sasseville 2021a:136f. and 227f., DCL:s.v.). It occurs in the protasis of an Akkadian omen text: i-te-eb-bidoppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i x[               pa-ṭá-a-ar m]u-ur-ṣí “he gets up doppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i [                : release from i]llness” (KUB 37.193 obv. 2’ (+) KBo 36.51 obv. 2’, see Wilhelm 1994a:22-26). The function of the gloss wedges is unclear. It may indicate a borrowing, which, judging by the root and form, would originate from Luwian. Alternatively, it may mark the translation of the Akkadian word by a native word. However, since i-te-eb-bi〉 ‘he gets up’ alone would not suffice as a symptom of illness, the former interpretation of doppelter Glossenkeiltar-ši-ia-i as an independent proposition, i.e. the mention of a second symptom, seems more likely. This leaves room for a broad range of meanings, and no concrete suggestion can be offered here.

1.1.5Stem

The diagnostic 3sg. pres. act. in -iyai identifies the word as a ḫi-conjugation verb in -iya-(i).

1.1.6Origin

Together, the gloss wedge marking and the 3sg. pres. act. in -iyai point to a lexeme of Luwian origin; cf. Rosenkranz 1950a:196, DLL:94, Oettinger 1979a:383 (although for erroneous reasons), CLL:217, HEG T:226, HHw:170.
