1.1.4Meaning

After a long series of unsuccessful attempts, it was van den Hout 1994a:311f., 315, who was finally able to elucidate the meaning of tarši-(ti) ‘to trample on’. He demonstrated that, in a dream report of the queen, the latter had feared that horses would trample on her, so she sat down on the floor and screamed until the charioteers led away the horses. As a result, she stated, none of the horse trampled or urinated on her. This interpretation is now accepted by Mouton 2007a:273f., 276, Sasseville 2021a:137, DCL:s.v.; similar Ünal 2003a:386. Van den Hout’s translation conforms well with the other passage that contains tarši-(ti). There, the speaker addresses the Storm-god and promises to celebrate a festival for him, if he frees him of all his evils: (17)[m]a-a-an-na am-me-e-al-la ku-e ḫul-u-wa na-at D10 en-ya ez-za-an m[a-a]ḫ-ḫa-an (18)[gì]r?-it an-da Glossenkeiltar-ši-iš-ši “and if you, what is my evil, too, oh Storm-god, trample on it like a straw with (your) [fee]t?, I shall celebrate also that festival separately for you” (KUB 56.19 i 17f., transliteration modified from Beckman 1983a:256-258, Ünal 2003a:383, de Roos 2007a:247f., Tischler 2016a:26). It is a destructive action against the evil that the speaker requests.Outdated Güterbock 1956a:124, Meriggi 1957a:211 with n. 51, Oettinger 1979a.563, Eichner 1979b:29, Watkins 1986a:60f n. 33, Beal 1992a:188-190, CLL:217, Ünal 2007a:701; undecided HEG T:225f.
