1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The spelling with ú- in ú-ra-ia-an-ni-iš at IBoT 1.32 obv. 25 is the single exception among all attestations of urayann(i)- and uriyann(i)- for both the functionary and the oracle bird.

[E.R.]

1.1.4Meaning

Like its variant uriyann(i)-MUŠEN, urayann(i)-MUŠEN denotes a kind of bird observed for oracles. The term is transferred from the name of a high official in Hittite administration, viz. uriyann(i)-/urayann(i)-, but both the exact function of the official and the tertium elude us (see HW:235, 461, Pecchioli Daddi 1975a:119f., HHw:187; no connection seen by Ünal 2007a:764, EDHIL:926f., Watson 2008a:549, HEG U-Z:98).
