1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The lexeme is spelt partly syllabically and is part of the HLuw word family around /ura/i-/ ‘great’. It has the same spelling as the noun /uraiya-/ ‘grandee’, even though the underlying morphology is different, see the discussion of the stem below. The spelling of the lexeme contains the logogram MAGNUS, which is a common feature throughout the entire word family.

1.1.4Meaning
Hawkins 2000a:469 first proposed the essive meaning ‘to be great’, which was later changed to include the inchoative meaning ‘to become great’ because of the context the verb occurs in. The context shows that the verb is used intransitively, and Sasseville 2021a:97f. suggests that it may, in fact, be derived from the noun /uraiya-/ ‘grandee’, which in turn is probably based on an otherwise unattested adjective */urai(ya)-/ ‘great’ vel sim.; a suitable semantic interpretation may hence be ‘to be(come) a grandee’. It is attested in SULTANHAN, §16: a-wa/i-´ hwa/i-sá MAGNUS+ra/i-ia-ri+i ma-sa-ti-tà-ia-ri+i-ha, approx. /a=wa hwis urayadi mas(s)atidayadi=ha/, meaning ‘Who(ever) becomes great / a grandee and (becomes) mas(s)atidaya-’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:466).

1.1.5Stem
The verb likely belongs to the verbs in /-a(i)-(di)/ (Iron Age /-a-(di)/), and it is probably derived from the form /uraiya-/ c. ‘grandee’, found in HLuw. only as a noun (cf. Sasseville 2021a:97f.).
