1.1.3Meaning

Adiego 2015b:408f. interprets the stem phonetically as [tuwa-] and translates the divine name as “de ce qui est placé, appartenant à ce qui est placé” connecting it with Lycian A tuwe- ‘to place (upright)’, Cuneiform Luwian tūwa- ‘to put, place’ (see s. vv.). However, Simon 2016c argues that this proposal is problematic both phonetically and semantically. He suggests instead a stem [tuba-] from the Luwic verb ‘to hit’ and connects it with Hieroglyphic Luwian tù-pa-sa6-ti ‘battle, fighting, war vel sim.’ (abl.-instr., TOPADA §18, see s.v.) that may represent its direct equivalent (if the Luwian word is to be read as tubassa/i- advocated by Simon). Since it is unknown if this semantic change happened in Carian too, the Carian divine name can refer either to a Weather God (‘god of smiting’) or to a War God (‘god of fighting’), which leads to the given two possibilities regarding the original meaning of the word.
