The n of the suffix -ant- is often graphically suppressed, as is typical for Luwian words. The occasional spelling reduction of the geminate -n- in the suffix -ann(i)- is linguistically irrelevant.

1.1.4Meaning

The determinative NINDA indicates that armantallann(i)- denotes a type of bread. Another type of bread built from the same base, i.e. arma- ‘moon’, is found in NINDAarmann(i)-. Hoffner 1974a:152 and Melchert (CLL:29) do not hazard any suggestions as to the semantic difference between the two bread names. Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:474 translate the bread with ‘small moon-shaped bread’.

1.1.5Stem

As posited by Hoffner 1974a:152, the bread name armantallann(i)- can be morphologically analyzed as arma- ‘moon’ + -ant(i)- + -alla/i- + -ann(i)-. If the base in -alla/i- has been substantivized, the diminutive function of -ann(i)- is correct, following Hoffner. However, if the base is adjectival, we would expect the formation in -ann(i)- to have an individualizing function. Evidence for the former perspective could be drawn from the word armantalli(ya)-.

1.1.6Origin

Laroche (DLL:177) also treated the bread name armantallann(i)- as a Luwianism in the cult of Ḫuwaššanna, though without justification (criticized by HW 2nd ed. A:326, hesitant HEG A:63). Indeed, the presence of this bread name in festival texts with strong Luwian influences can be viewed as a clue but not as proof. Melchert (CLL:29) implicitly refers to the Luwian morphology, i.e. the suffixes -alla/i- and -ann(i)-. In any case, the Luwian origin is made clear by the suffix -ann(i)- < *-é-no-, which cannot be Hittite (viz. -ēna-), whereas the geminate -ll- suffix could reflect Hittite -alli- n. for instrument nouns. However, when seeing it as an actual Luwian formation, the suffix -alla/i- as the base of -ann(i)- is preferable; see under Stem.
