1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, since it is not yet clear if the word has any cognates in the other Anatolian languages. While the spelling is clear regarding the medio-passive ending, the stem may involve a singleton /l/ or a geminate /ll/.

Both the contextual use as well as the spelling with 〈a〉 instead of 〈á〉 render any connection with /alamis-/ ‘(unknown)’ highly unlikely.

1.1.4Meaning

The contexts of attestation suggest that the verb has a negative denotation, because it occurs in the protasis of a curse formula and describes some offence with the imposed fine following in the apodosis. EMİRGAZİ 1A, §13 runs: ma-pa-wa/i-ta POST-sa CAPUT a-la-ri+i, approx. /man=ba=wa=tta apparis …-ttis alari/, translating as ‘If a lesser (noble)man makes a mistake (?), (he shall pay it to the patron)’ (cf. Hawkins 1995a:89).Note that Hawkins read the lines differently in 1995, but has since produced a newer yet unpublished version (apud Yakubovich 2017e).

1.1.5Stem

The shape of the attested ending suggests that the present verb is a root verb with endings from the mi-conjugation, either lenited or unlenited (cf. Sasseville 2021a:258f., 297f.).
