1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this word is quite certain and rests on the interpretation of its cognate and synonym HLuw. /kwitta/ ‘where’. The additional /n/ has been identified as a variant by Carruba 1984a:66. There is no discernable difference either in spelling or semantics between the two forms.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of this lexeme is quite clear from its contexts of attestation and was first suggested by Bossert 1949a:112 for the KARATEPE 1 bilingual inscription, where it translates Phoenician b-mqmm b-ʾš ‘in places in which’ in Hu. and Ho. §20 and just ʾš ‘where’ in Hu. §34 (for the latter see Bossert 1950-1951a:275, who assumes that it means ‘whereto’ in this context’). KARATEPE 1 Hu., §34 runs: CAPUT-ti-sa-wa/i+ra/i kwa/i-i-ta-na hwa/i-sà-i-ia “VIA”-wa/i-na (“PES2”)i-u-na, approx. /…-ttis=wa=di kwittan kwissai harwan iuna/, translating as ‘where a (noble)man fears to walk the road’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:53).

1.1.5Stem
The adverb is a variant of HLuw. /kwitta/ ‘where’, as made clear by Carruba 1984a:66. The form with the final /n/ appears to be the younger variant of the older, shorter form, which represents the original nom./acc. sg. n. of the relative and interrogative pronoun, i.e. */kwit/. It was marked an adverb with the suffixation of /-a/, which prevented the dental from undergoing apocope.
