1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this noun is provisional, since its spelling shows variation between /hazzann(i)-/ and /hazziyann(i)-/. While contraction of word-medial /iya/ is quite common, the result of that is usually /i/, not /a/, cf. Melchert 2003b:183. However, the word is a loan from Akkadian (probably via Hittite), and Hawkins 2000a:149, 525 points out that already in Hittite both variants appear in Akkadograms; cf. the discussions below.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is proposed on the basis of the Hittite and Akkadian attestations of the word (Hawkins 2000a:149), and the contexts fit that interpretation. BULGARMADEN, §10 runs: hwa/i-sa-pa-wa/i-ti-i mu-ti-ia (DEUS)MONS-ti ha-˹zi˺-ia-ni-sá-´ ˹i-zi˺-ia-ti-i, approx. /kwis=ba=wa=di Muttiya watti hazziyannis izziyadi/, meaning ‘(He) who makes himself mayor for the mountain Mutti, (he shall offer kurupi-sheep to Tarhunazza’s gods year by year)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:523).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The word is a loan from Akkadian ḫazannu ‘mayor, chief magistrate’ (cf. CAD Ḫ:163-165), whose stem-final /u/ has been replaced with the i-mutated inflection pattern of the common gender nouns.

1.1.6Origin

The word is a loan from Akkadian ḫazannu ‘mayor, chief magistrate’ (Hawkins 2000a:149, 525; cf. CAD Ḫ:163-165). Since the Akkadian word is already used in Hittite texts (see Pecchioli Daddi 1982a:449f.), it is likely that the path of the borrowing into HLuw. went via Hittite rather than directly from Akkadian (cf. Giusfredi 2012a:154f.).
