1.1.4Meaning

Following Dercksen 2007a:33f., the Akkadian context of kulitanu ((7)22 1/2 še kú.babbar (8)a-ší-kà-tim (9)ù ku-li-ta-ni7 “22 1/2 grains of silver for flasks (for oil and perfume) and k.”) points to a type vessel. More specifically, the mention next to a flask for oil and perfume and of silver as one of its materials makes it likely that it is a small and precious object. As proposed by Dercksen, this allows for an identification with the DUGkulli(t)- vessel attested in Hittite transmission (see under Lemma).

1.1.5Stem

DUGkulli(t)- is enlarged with the suffix -an(n)um, which is typical for borrowings into Old Assyrian (Dercksen 2007a:33f.) and is at least in several cases to be identified with the denominative -ann(i)- suffix in Luwian; cf. Dercksen 2007a:41 with references to earlier views, Yakubovich 2010d:216 n. 12, Simon 2020h:611; considering a Semitic origin for the suffix Vernet & Vernet 2019a:1151-1155). In the present lexeme, even the original diminutive function that the suffix may express in Luwian could be assumed.

1.1.6Origin

On account of the underlying stem DUGkulli(t)- (by some also based on the suffix -an(n)um used in borrowings), a Luwian origin of kullitannu is assumed by Dercksen 2007a:33f., Yakubovich 2010d:216 n. 12, Valério & Yakubovich 2010a:114, Simon 2020h:611, and Vernet & Vernet 2019a:1129.
