1.1 Luwian in Hittite transmission

kulli(t)-

‘(a vessel)’

1.1.1Transmission

All occurrences of the noun come from the enthronement ritual for Teššub and Ḫebat, a text with a strong Kizzuwatnean affinity.

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. [DUGgu]l-li-ša KBo 10.34 i 28 (CTH 700, NS)
  DUGgul-li-ša KBo 10.34 i 28 (CTH 700, NS)
nom./acc. pl. DUGku-ul-li-ta KBo 10.34 i 27 (CTH 700, NS)
    Bo 4999 iv 6 (CTH 700, NS)
dat./loc. pl. (Hitt.) DUGku-ul-li-ta-aš Bo 4999 iv 8 (CTH 700, NS)
unclear DUGku-ul-li-ta-aš KBo 43.202 iii 5 (CTH 700, NS)

The attestation at KBo 23.28+ i 47 cited by Ünal 2007a:359 is not acceptable. The traces of the word point to ]x-li-ša-aš, which would be incompatible with the present lexeme.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Contra Starke 1990a:208, the traces of the first sign in line i 28 of KBo 10.34 point to -gu]l-, instead of -u]l-.

[E.R.]

1.1.4Meaning

The use of the determinative DUG indicates that kulli(t)- denotes a type of vessel (HW:400, HEG A-K:624, Starke 1990a:208, CLL:106, HHw:83, Ünal 2007a:359). In KBo 10.34 i 28, its use for honey and oil is mentioned.

1.1.5Stem

Starke 1990a:208 was the first to offer the morphological analysis now accepted. The Luwian stem DUGkulli(t)- shows the neuter nom./acc. sg. with secondary ending, whereas the stem in -t- provides the base for other case forms including the Hittite stem kullita- (see also HHw:83, CLL:106, HEG A-K:624, HED K:239).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

On account of the inflectional properties (see under Forms and Stem), a Luwian borrowing into Hittite was assumed by Starke 1990a: 208, CLL:106, HHw:83, Melchert 2005a:452, and van den Hout 2006a:250, but an ultimately Hurrian origin has also been proposed (Kronasser 1966a:58, 190 followed in HEG A-K:624, HED K:239).
