Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The emendation at KUB 42.57, 5’ follows Burgin 2022a:534. – Noteworthy is the spelling variation of all three geminate consonants.

1.1.4Meaning

As can be concluded from the Sumerogram túg ‘garment’, sometimes governing the adjective kuggullāimma/i- and sometimes used as a determinative for the substantivized adjective, the lexeme describes or denotes a type of garment (HED K:234; see also Götze 1940a:60f., HW:114, Meriggi 1962c:106, Košak 1982a:184f., Siegelová 1986a:510-512, HHw:82, Ünal 2007a:356, Soysal 2016b:422, Burgin 2022a:443f., DCL:s.v.; not listed in DLL and CLL). The formant -āimma/i- can be identified with the possessive suffix, which is here attached to a base kuggulla- ‘round disk’ attested in Hittite transmission, hence ‘a garment decorated with round disks’Now outdated HED K:234: “a garment that was made into a *kuk(k)ulla-, i.e. rolled or folded up”; different HEG A-K:617 with a derivation from the plant name kuk(k)ul(l)a-, but see under Lemma..

1.1.5Stem

While Tischler (HEG A-K:617) and Puhvel (HED K:234) interpret kuggullāimma/i- as the participle of an intermediary denominative verb, a derivational process without this step, i.e. directly from noun to possessive adjective, is amply attested for Luwian (CLL:iv) and hence to be assumed here, too. For the reduplicated base kuggulla-, see under Lemma.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

A Luwian origin was already postulated by Rosenkranz 1952a:10 for the base noun kuggulla-, and as a derivative with the Luwian suffix -āimma/i-, kuggullāimma/i- must belong to the same language. The same conclusion is found in Meriggi 1962c:106, HEG A-K:617, HED K:234, DCL:s.v.
