1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The sole attestation of an -a- vowel in the fourth syllable of ša-⸢na-ku⸣-uk-kal-la-an at KBo 19.142 ii 18’ may be due to a dictation mistake, but could also indicate that the vowel was phonologically a schwa whose phonetic lip rounding adjacent to the labiovelar was undone by the scribe.

1.1.4Meaning
For the contexts in lists of plant names, see HEG Š:810 and CHD Š:158. The determinative SAR leaves no doubt that šānak(k)ukkulla- represents yet another plant name. HHw:142 suggests ‘pumpkin (?)’ for unknown reasons; Ünal 2007a:599 specifies it as a bulbous plant, based on his understanding of
kug(g)ulla- as a bulbous object, but see under Lemma.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
The discussion whether the šānak(k)ukkulla- consists of one or two words was, in spite of the space after šāna, decided in favor of the former option on account of the spelling with -ak- at KUB 51.18 obv. 16’ (see HEG Š:810 for references). However, it seems clear that we are dealing with a compound with
kug(g)ulla- as its second member (HEG Š:810f., CHD Š:158, HED K:233, implicit Ünal 2007a:599). For speculative connections for the first member of compound, cf. HEG Š:810f.

1.1.6Origin
The assumption underlying this lemma, i.e. that šānak(k)ukkulla- is a Luwian loan word, rests on the Hurrian provenance of the texts in which the word occurs, and more importantly, on the Luwian origin of
kug(g)ulla-.
