1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. pl. n. /…/ “SOLIUM”(-)x-ma-ma-pa-wa/i MARAŞ 1, §5 (Maraş)

The attestation at MARAŞ 1, §5 is followed by a string of enclitics: 〈-pa-wa/i〉, i.e. /=ba=wa/ ‘but’ and the quotative particle. Also, the unrecognised sign after the logogram may perhaps be one of the signs representing numbers yet used for its phonological value here, but this cannot be verified without further textual evidence.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is largely unknown, for it has so far remained unconnected to any others in the Anatolian languages. Furthermore, it has yet to be uncovered how to interpret the spelling attested at MARAŞ 1, §5, i.e. whether the logogram (sign *299) should be understood as a determinative or as representing part of the phonological form of the word. Hawkins 2000a:264 cautiously regards the form as a participle, which would entail an interpretation of (part of) the stem as /…°mamma/i-/.

The logogram is found with a number of other words, among them the verbs /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit, dwell’ and /isnu(wa)-(i)/ ‘to set, settle’ and several more related words.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is assigned tentatively by Hawkins 2000a:263, based on the presence of the logogram , which is found with words from the domains sitting and settling, as well as on the context. In the passage around MARAŞ 1, §5, the author of the inscription relates how he repopulated a destroyed region: “SOLIUM”(-)x-ma-ma-pa-wa/i (BONUS)u-su-tara/i-ha (DEUS)TONITRUS-hu-ta-sá-ti-i (DEUS)i-ia-sa-ti-ha LEPUS+ra/i-ia-ti, approx. /…-mamma=ba=wa usuttariHa Tarhuntassadi Iyassadi=ha tabariyadi/, meaning ‘(I settled the devastated places), and I improved the settlements (?) by the command of (the Storm-god) Tarhunt and (the god) Ea’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:263).

1.1.5Stem

The word appears to be a neuter gender noun, or another part of speech that is used substantivally. However, much of the stem of the word is likely unclear, cf. the discussion of the phonological form above. Following the suggestion by Hawkins 2000a:264, it may represent a participle in /-mma/i-/ of an otherwise unattested verb with a stem ending in /-ma-/. This analysis is certainly possible, but cannot be proven without additional textual evidence.
