1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word rests on its transparent spelling in conjunction with its cognates, see lemma head.

While it is not in doubt that the present word belongs to the word family around /nahh(i)-/ ‘fear’, it should be noted that it alone lacks the determinative (sign *341, previously read ), which commonly appears with words denoting mental states or the body parts associated with these (van den Hout 2002a:176, who also suggests the reading on p. 182).

1.1.4Meaning

Hawkins 2000a:183, 547 connects the word to the similar looking form /nahhutti(ya)-/ ‘terrified (?)’ in ASSUR letter e, §10 without assigning any meaning, but pointing towards the etymological connection with CLuw. doppelter Glossenkeilnaḫḫūwa-(i) ‘there is a concern (impers.)’. Yakubovich 2017e:s.v. proposed a meaning ‘curse’, but the contexts do not force such a meaning, which is why a less specific meaning closer to that of its cognates including HLuw. /nahh(i)-/ ‘fear’ is given preference here.

KARKAMIŠ A5a, §6: wa/i-mu-u-i [x]-〈CRUX〉-mi-i na-hu-ti-na ARHA pu˺, approx. /wa=mu …-mi nahuttin ahha punta/, which may mean ‘They (scil. the author’s parents) held back terror (?) for me as/in …’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:182f., Sasseville 2021a:303 and the HLuw. verb /pu-(di)/ ‘to lift, to hold’).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The noun is built from the u-stem that has also served as a basis for doppelter Glossenkeilnaḫḫūwa-(i) (cf. Sasseville 2021a:372f. and CLL:153). The u-suffix is not present in its cognates HLuw. /nahh(i)-/ and Hittite nāḫ-/naḫḫ-(ḫi), and its function is not clear, cf. already Weitenberg 1984a:186.

Outdated is any connection with Hittite nakki- (see e.g. HED N:16f.), which was already refuted by Oettinger 1978a:79 n. 21, Weitenberg 1984a:445 n. 471-473 and others.
