The case form depends on the syntactic analysis of dūpana as either the expression of a direction (Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:375 with n. 9) or an accusative of respect (DCL:s.v.).

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The reading suggested in Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:375 is far from certain, but nothing speaks against it.

1.1.4Meaning
The semantic interpretation of the putative lexeme (for its uncertain reading, see under Graphic Features) was proposed by Melchert & Yakubovich 2022a:375 (see also DCL:s.v.). It relies, on the one hand, on the combination with walzammiš, a possible cognate of Hitt. walk- and walkiye/a- ‘to strike, abuse’, and on the other hand, on the assumed etymological relationship with the root of CLuw. dūp(a)i-(di) ‘to strike’. Accordingly, Melchert translates the syntagm dūpana walzammiš describing the substitute animal as “walza-ed into affliction” (with dat./loc. sg. interpretation of dūpana). Alternatively, his analysis of dūpana as nom./acc. pl. (DCL:s.v.) yields “walza-ed with regard to affliction.” Neither interpretation is fully satisfactory, which adds to the doubts expressed in the discussion of the reading (see under Graphic Features).

1.1.5Stem
If the form dūpana is in fact a dat./loc. sg., the underlying stem belongs to the non-mutating common gender -a- class. If, however, we are dealing with a neuter nom./acc. pl., both an n-stem and a thematic stem pose viable options.
