1.1.3Graphic Features

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Unknown. The shape of sign *398 resembles a horizontal bar, similar to the number sign (*397). Its meaning has yet to be elucidated, not least because it occurs only rarely and usually paired with other logograms as in the present case.

1.1.4Meaning

Unknown. Hawkins 1995a:99 suggests ‘royal’ vel sim. due to the presence of and the context, but the role of *398 remains unclear. The clause at EMİRGAZİ 1A, §26 is quite long and part of an elaborate curse formula extending over several clauses: *a-wa/i-tu-tá (DEUS)SOL SOL+RA/I (DEUS)TONITRUS CAELUM CERVUS3.DEUS.*463-ti (DEUS)MONS.THRONUS á-(FEMINA.DEUS)*461 REX.*398-za/i sara/i-za/i INFRA tara/i-za/i-nú-wa/i-tu, approx. /a=wa=du=tta … Arinna Tarhunz tippasassis Immarakruntiyas … Alas ...-nzi sarinzi zanta tarzanuwantu/, meaning ‘(But the king who damages these stelae …), for him, the sun-goddess of Arinna, the storm-god Tarhunt of Heaven, the stag-god Kruntiya of the Open Country, Mount Sarpa, the goddess Ala shall overturn the REX.*398- sar(i)-!’ (Hawkins 1995a:88f.).
