doppelter Glossenkeilaranatiyanza

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

The word is attested only once in a NS ritual fragment.

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. n. or dat./loc. pl. or (Hitt.) nom. sg. c. doppelter Glossenkeila-ra-na-ti-ia-an-za KBo 13.200 obv. 3 (CTH 470, NS)

Melchert (in CLL:25) tentatively assumes that the form represents a Luwian nom./acc. sg. n., but this cannot be validated, because a Luwian dat./loc. pl. is possible, too. The Hittite nom. sg. c. of an -ant- stem considered in Ünal 2007a:47f. remains unassured.

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv.

1.1.4Meaning

The fragmentary context does not permit a semantic interpretation. Also, speculations about the stem formation, which would build on the equally unassured adjective arānašša/i-, do not lead to any tenable conclusions (cf. CLL:25, HW 2nd ed. A:249, Ünal 2007a:47f. without translation).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

While Ünal 2007a:47f. assumes an -ant- stem doppelter Glossenkeilaranatiyant-, Melchert (in CLL:25) suggests doppelter Glossenkeilarana(n)ti(ya)- (parallel to the Hieroglyphic Luwian nom./acc. sg. n. -ti-ia-ti-ia-za /zidiyadiyan=za/).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The marking with gloss wedges points to a Luwian origin, which is not unlikely in view of the double use of the -i(ya)- suffix productive in Luwian, but not in Hittite.
