1.1.3Meaning

The context in the song incipit provides little towards the semantic elucidation of ḫarwandu (KBo 30.167 iii 4’). Only two other words are attested complete in the paragraph, viz. nūtarza (ibid. iii 3’) and parzata (ibid. iii 5’). With all due caution, connections for these are considered in this dictionary with CLuw. nanuntarri(ya)- ‘present’ and Hitt. išpart-/išparza- [ispart(s)-] ‘to escape, take off, leap up’, respectively. If correct, the meaning ‘let them send (?)’ suggested for ḫarwandu in CLL:61, also based on purely etymological grounds (cf. ḫaruwa- ‘path’), would be compatible with the scenario that immediate dispatching of something is demanded, and subsequently someone leapt up to comply with the request. The translation is adopted in HHw:45 and EDHIL:317, and provisionally accepted as the best solution here also, in spite of the difference in spelling vis-à-vis its putative base word ḫa-ru-wa- ‘path’.

1.1.4Stem

The 3pl. impv. ending -andu leaves open a few options for the identification of the stem class: -a-(ti) or root verbs ending in a vowel in both conjugations. On account of the suggested meaning, a denominative verb in -a-(ti) has the best chances.
