  la-al-pí-i-in(=) KUB 32.8+5 iii 14’ (CTH 759, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The plene spelling in la-al-pí-i-in(=) at KUB 32.8+5 iii 14’ comes unexpectedly, since it would normally signify a relational adjective in -i(ya)-, but here the context demands the base noun lalp(i)- (see under Meaning).

1.1.4Meaning

The translation ‘eyelash’ is based on the sequence of actions involving the tappān(i)-, the lalp(i)-, and the kuwannan(i)- (KUB 32.8+5 iii 11’-16’), matching the list tētana- ‘hair’, laplē[pa]- ‘eyelash’, and enera- ‘eyebrow’ in the preceding Hittite instruction passage (ibid. iii 7’f.); see Meriggi 1957a:223 and Meriggi 1957b:59; accepted in HW:91 and DLL:62 (with question mark), Starke 1990a:422 n. 1520, CLL:124, HW 2nd ed. E:37, HHw:91, HEG L-N:43f., HED L:63, EDHIL:521 (cf. also Laroche 1954a:124 in his review of Otten 1953a with a different match (still without translation); erroneous Kammenhuber 1986a:89 with n. 8; see also under the lemma of kuwannan(i)- ‘eyebrow’).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

Although no forms built from the oblique cases are attested, the acc. sg. c. in -in and the comparison with Hitt. laplap(p)a-/laplip(p)a- (with full reduplication) suggest an i-mutated stem in Luwian. On its morphological relation to the Hittite cognate and its reduplication, cf. DLL:62, Kronasser 1962c:119, HED L:63.
