1.1.3Meaning
On account of the parallelism between LW 12.6 and LW 13.1, scholars try to equate semantically and functionally τesas with ãnaš. Meriggi 1935a:102 compares τesas with Lyc. A teze/i- ‘sarcophagus’ and translates the Lydian word accordingly (partly followed by Gusmani 1961a:190 n. 50). This etymological comparison is nowadays phonologically untenable. Yakubovich (pers. comm.) suggests that τesa- refers to a priestly title because of his translation of the verb luko-(d) used in the following clause (see under lemma).
Pending a solid etymological approach, no meaning can be assigned to Lyd. τesa-.
