1.1 Luwian in Hittite transmission

1.1.2Forms
| nom. or gen. sg. (Hitt.) | tar-ḫu-un-ti-ti-ia-aš | KUB 20.12, 8’ | (CTH 670, NS) |
| tar-ḫu-un-ti-ti-i[a-aš?] | KUB 20.12, 3’ | (CTH 670, NS) | |
| [tar-ḫ]u-un-ti-ti-ia-aš | KUB 12.16 i 16’ | (CTH 448, NS) |
A genitive singular (thus CLL:212, EDHIL:835) following the numeral 3 is unusual in this kind of context (see under Meaning) and thus, a nominative singular of a stem -iya- c. should not be excluded.

1.1.4Meaning
On contextual grounds, Hoffner 1974a:186 suggests that tarḫuntitiyaš, which is preceded by a numeral at KUB 20.12, 3’, refers to a type of food. Because of the phrase LUGAL-uš pár-ši-ia one line later, he posits that it refers more specifically to a kind of bread (or cake), while admitting that the lack of the determinative NINDA ‘bread’ undermines his claim (tentatively followed by Starke 1990a:186f., CLL:212, but more skeptically HEG T:171). Hoffner 1974a:186 further adds that the bread or cake in question should have the shape of the Storm-god, which would account for its name.

1.1.5Stem
The stem of the word tar-ḫu-un-ti-ti-ia-aš is not obvious. A Luwian abstract noun in -it- n. can be subtracted from the Luwian divine name tarḫunt-, i.e. *tarḫunt-it- n. (thus CLL:212, pace Starke 1990a:186, who sees an adjective in -i(ya)- in-between). The rest is more obscure: Starke 1990a:186f. and Tischler (HEG T:171) see a common gender i-stem, i.e. tarḫuntiti- c., whereas Hoffner 1974a:186 and Melchert (CLL:212) posit an adjectival formation in -i(ya)- derived form the abstract noun. Another possibility is a substantive in -iya- c., but that also lacks solid evidence and thus the stem should be left open for now.
A compound made of tarḫunt- + titiya- cannot be correct, since we would expect an s-epenthesis to occur between the two alveolars, i.e. **tarḫunz(a)titiya-, whereas tarḫunti + tiya- would be phonologically plausible, but hardly provable based on the current data.

1.1.6Origin
Its Luwian origin is confirmed by the it-suffix and its derivational base tarḫunt- (see under Stem.)
[D.S.]
For the derivational base, see CLuw. tarḫunt-.
