According to Starke 1990a:160 (followed by Melchert in CLL:16), it is unclear whether the imperative ending -āi is Hittite or Luwian, but Sasseville 2021a does not list an imperative ending -āi in any of the Luwian paradigms.

1.1.4Meaning

Based on its putative stem formation, viz. a denominal derivative of *annarum(ma)n- ‘strength, virility’, the verb should mean something like ‘to be strong, virile’. The context requires only a slight adjustment as ‘to feel strong, virile’, as it appears alternately with duškiške/a- ‘to rejoice’ in a letter: (15’)... Dsîn-aš ma-aḫ-ḫa-an i-na itu 6KAM (16’)[du-u]š-ki-iš-ki § (17’)[        ] ma-aḫ-ḫa-an i-na itu 7KAM an-na-ru-ma-a-i⸣ §  (18’)[      ] ma-aḫ-ḫa-an i-na itu ⸢11⸣KAM an-na-ru-ma-a-i § (19’) )[      ] ma-aḫ-ḫa-an a-na ezen4.itu du-uš-ke-eš-ki “Rejoice like the Moon-god in the sixth month, a. like [        ] in the seventh month, a. like in the eleventh month, look forward [              ] to the monthly festival!” (following Starke 1990a:160 with his variation between ‘freue dich’ and ‘freue dich auf’ for duškiške/a- i-na ... and duškiške/a- a-na ... respectively).

1.1.5Stem

As pointed out under Meaning and Forms, annarumā(i)- is very likely a denominal verb derived from *annarum(ma)n-, but an imperative form -āi is attested nowhere in Luwian. In contrast, Hittite features imperatives in -āi in the class of denominative verbs in -ā(i)-(mi) (type ḫandā(i)-(mi)). Therefore, the verb must be interpreted a hybrid formation with a Luwian base and Hittite stem final suffix and ending. For the derivational history of *annarum(ma)n-, see under the Lemma annarumma/i-.

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin is noted in Starke 1990a:160, CLL:16, HHw:16, EDHIL:387; with question mark in Ünal 2007a:28). In spite of the Hittite verbal suffix and ending, the base with its initial a- vowel is surely Luwian in contrast to Hittite i- in innarawant- etc.
