przzidi(je)-

‘of the first rank’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is a hapax occurring on the sepulchral inscription TL 128, dated on textual grounds to the reign of Trbbẽnimi. Consequently, the inscription cannot have been hewn later than 390/80 BCE (Wagner 2011a:151).

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. przzidi TL 128.1 (Limyra)

Differently as an abl./instr. of przze/i- according to Neumann 1993c:38 and as dat./loc. sg. of przzid- in DLL:52 (see Meaning).

1.1.3Meaning

This lexeme occurs as an apposition to Krustti, the owner of TL 128. The whole nominal phrase reads as krustti t[r]bb:ẽnemeh : tideri : przzidi : axãti : esbe[h]i ‘Krustti, collacteus of Trbbẽnimi, przzidi sacrificial officiant (?) of horses’. In the view of Neumann 1993c:38, przzidi is an abl./instr. form of przze/i- ‘foremost’ (reiterated in Neumann 2004b:234, Neumann 2007a:287, abl./instr. also in Gusmani 1960b:509, Korolev & Shevoroshkin 1969a:530). However, this is not possible, as an abl./instr. form of przze/i- would rather be przzedi. Conversely, Melchert (DLL:52) analyzes przzidi as an abstract noun in -id, derived from przze/i-, with the meaning ‘foremost rank’. Under this analysis, przzidi must be a dat./loc. sg. form. However, dat./loc. would not be the expected case if przzidi stands in apposition to Krustti, which is in the nom. sg. While assuming apposition is not pressing, it is the most compelling analysis contextually (a translation ‘sacrificial officiant (?) of horses in/for the first rank’ seems inappropriate). A viable alternative is to analyze przzidi as a nom. sg. c. form of a derivative with the appurtenance suffix -i(je)- to a noun *przzid- ‘foremost rank’ as identified by Melchert. The meaning would consequently be ‘of the foremost (i.e. first) rank’. Such an analysis yields a satisfactory translation of the sentence, przzidi modifying axãti, i.e. ‘Krustti, collacteus of Trbbẽnimi, first rank sacrificial officiant (?) of the horses’. Accordingly, the sentence makes more syntactic and contextual sense than if przzidi were analyzed as dat./loc. sg. For the placement of i(je)-adjectives before their head noun, cf. e.g. kumezijẽ : θθẽ on N 320.7. Derivation in -ij(e)- from nouns in -id- has a precedent in Lycian – cf. ãx[r]ahidijẽ on TL 29.2.

1.1.4Stem

Provided the analysis presented in Meaning is correct, Lyc. przzidi(je)- is an adjective in -i(je)- formed to a base noun *przzid- ‘foremost rank’, in turn formed with the abstract suffix -id to przze/i- ‘foremost’.
