nom. sg. c. pár-li-iš KBo 29.38 obv. 5’ (CTH 769, MS?)
  pár-l[i-iš] KUB 35.109 iii 10 (CTH 765, MS)

There is no contextual support that ezen4 pár-la (KUB 25.26 ii 16, Hittite transmission, adduced in DLL:29 and CLL:169) belongs to the present lemma (see CHD P:174). The same applies to other words with initial parl- cited in CHD P:174; however, see parlašalla-).

1.1.4Meaning

According to CLL:168, the part of speech is not assured, but if the meaning assignment ‘front, foremost’ as presented under parlai(ya)- ‘front (adj.) (?)’ is correct, a classification as adjective is most probable. Additional support comes from the fact that parla/i- occurs twice in predicative use, which is frequent with expressions that specify a position (KUB 35.109 iii 10: “later, let him become the first/in front position/on the front with (regard to) the [   ]”, KUB 35.132 ii 7’f.: “They made him the foremost [   ]”). However, more evidence for the semantic interpretation than that drawn from the derivational history and the syntactic function cannot be adduced, due to the fragmentary state of the contexts.

1.1.5Stem

The word ends in an adjectival -la/i- suffix. Its base is one of the locatival stems, viz. *pra-/par- ‘in front’ (parallel to *šra-/šar- ‘up, over’ → šarla/i-).
