Contra Melchert 2012d:284 (followed in Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:214), it is not necessary to assume an archaic nom./acc. sg. n. in -ašša < *-assad. Instead, a substantivized nom./acc. n. pl. or coll. ‘(the) exterior’ (← ‘being external’), functioning as an apposition to modify the head nouns, is fully compatible with the surrounding syntax; cf. also ibid. iii 3’ substantival nanuntarriša ‘(the) present’ (for the latter, see also CLL:155).

1.1.4Meaning
Like parittarwalli(ya)- ‘external’, parittaruwāšša- also forms a merism with a parallel-structured derivative of ēr(ḫu)wa-, i.e. ir(ḫū)wašša- ‘(the) interior’, being part of the same series of merisms. Accordingly, the meaning must be more or less identical to that of parittarwalli(ya)-. Therefore, Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:214 translate ‘of exterior’. However, considering that the morphosyntactic context points to a substantivized nom./acc. pl. or coll. form (see under Forms) in -ašša, a substantival translation ‘(the) exterior’ is preferable.Outdated are Laroche 1958b:183, DLL:79, CLL:168, Carruba 1982b:3 n. 4, HHw:s.v.

1.1.5Stem
Already Otten 1953a:104 noted that parittarwalli(ya)- and parittaruwāšša- go back to the same base. Building on the analysis of Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:222f., one can start from parī ‘forth, away’ (see under Lemma) and assume a suffixal chain made of -ttar- < *-tro- (polar suffix; Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a have *-tero-), -wa(/i)- < *-u̯o- (polar suffix, reinforcing) and the adjectival suffix -ašša/i- (for substantivizations in -ašša pluralia tantum/collectives, see Sasseville 2018a:303f.).
