1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is reasonably clear, because it belongs to the word family around the verb HLuw. /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit, dwell’, as is obvious from its spelling (cf. Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1978a:108f.). The combination of the logogram (sign *299) and the reading aid 〈MI〉 represents a typical spelling of the verb, although it has to be said that the reason for the presence of 〈MI〉 has yet to be unearthed (Hawkins 2000a:112, 292).Already Hawkins, Morpurgo Davies & Neumann 1973a:46 n. 161 remark on the peculiarities of the word family and the various spellings. As the beginning of the word is represented by logograms, it cannot be said with certainty whether its phonological form is /asaiya-/ or /asiya-/, cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

Occurring in the KARATEPE 1 bilingual inscription, the meaning of this word was already clear to Bossert 1950-1951a:269, 282 despite an erroneous phonological interpretation, because the HLuw. phrase corresponds to Phoenician w-šbt nʿmt ‘and good living’. The cognate link with the verb /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit, dwell’, established by Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1978a:108f., supports the semantic assignment. At KARATEPE 1 (Hu.), §36 reads: a-wa/i á-mi-ia-za (DIES)há-li-ia-za (CORNU+RA/I)su+ra/i-sá (LINGERE)há-sá-sá-ha sa-na-wa/i-za-sa-ha SOLIUM.MI-ia-sa sá-ta, approx. /a=wa ammiyanz halliyanz suris hassas=ha sannawizzas=ha as(a)iyas asanta/, meaning ‘In my days, (there) was abundance and luxury and very good living’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:53).

1.1.5Stem

The word is a common gender and could represent an action noun in /-iya-/, cf. Sasseville 2020c and Sasseville 2021a:128f., although there is no verb in -i-(ti) built to the root /as-/ ‘to sit’, from which an action noun in /-a-/ could have been derived. Nonetheless, one cannot exclude that it is a deradical stem in /-iya-/ c., i.e. /asiya-/; cf. CLuw. uwaniya- c. ‘rock-face’. A different approach would be to derive it directly from the noun /asa-/ c. ‘seat’, i.e. (adj.) */asai(ya)- → (sbst.) /asaiya-/ c.
