1.1.4Meaning

CLuw. āššiwantattar-/-t(ta)n- regularly appears in a list of evils: tapāru-, tatariyam(ma)n- ‘curse’, ḫīrū(t)- ‘perjury’, āššiwantattar-/-t(ta)n-, and māyašša/i- eme-a/i- ‘tongue of the multitude, slander’. Its meaning ‘poverty’ as suggested first by Meriggi 1957b:65 n. 2 was founded on that of the nearly homophonous Hitt. ašiwantatar ‘poverty’ and confirmed by the contrast of its adjectival base word āššiwant(i)- ‘poor’ with ḫappinaḫḫaḫḫi ‘I make rich’ a line after (KUB 41.32 i 9’f.; see under Lemma). In spite of Kammenhuber’s rejection in HW 2nd ed. A:407, the semantic assignment found general acceptance; see DLL:33, HEG A-K:83, HED A, E, I:212, Starke 1990a:449, CLL:36, Melchert 1994a:63, 367, HHw:27, EDHIL:221, Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:209.
