1.1.3Meaning
The word mλola denotes something that lies to the right and to the left of the stele and that should pertain to a rock-carved grave. Vetter 1959a:19 takes it rightly as a substantive instead of an adverb (pace Brandenstein 1929a:294 ‘partially, in part’, Gusmani 1964a:166 ‘part’, Gérard 2005a:129 ‘id.’) and translates it with ‘plot’ (followed by Gusmani 1985a:129). Gusmani 1985a explains that the mλola that belong to either Šiwãm or Mẽλas are to be explained as further plots for the brothers of the children of Atas, the owner of the tomb, which would explain why they do not have patronymic adjectives following their names. In any case, the meaning of the word has been doubted (see Zgusta 1955a:528-530, Sh. Hawkins 2013a:159 ‘(part of a grave complex)’) and the meaning ‘plot’ is far from assured. The translations ‘side’ or ‘part’ should be kept in mind.
