1.1.4Meaning
The lexeme describes an architectural object that, together with the URUDUheyawallit ‘rain gutter’, encircles a tower. On contextual grounds, Boysan-Dietrich 1987a:103-105 suggests that it refers to the top part of the tower, i.e. its balcony including cornice and battlements (followed by Sasseville 2021e:644f.). Puhvel (HED M:71) proposes the meanings ‘railing, fence’ implying a wooden balustrade around the top part of the tower, which is congruent with the idea of Boysan-Dietrich 1987a; cf. CHD L-N:186 ‘an architectural feature’, Tischler (HEG L-M:136) ‘a part of a building’, Miller 2013a:223 leaves it untranslated.

1.1.5Stem
The word is formed with the suffix -wann(i)-, or better -wa(/i)- + -ann(i)-, either way of Luwian origin (Rieken & Sasseville 2014a). From this suffix, an original collective was built, i.e. -anna- (coll.).
[D.S.]
1.1.6Origin
Melchert 2005a:449 adduces GIŠmariyawanna- as a Luwianism in Hittite Transmission, probably on account of the suffix -wann(i)- (thus HED M:71) or rather the suffix chain -wa- + -ann(i)-, which would be a solid argument, since the geminate in -ann(i)- has come about through Čop’s Law. For the Luwian derivational chain -wa(/i)- + -ann(i)-, see Rieken & Sasseville 2014a. The recognition of the word in the Lydian language might also speak for a Luwic origin; see below.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘balcony, balustrade (?)’
Comparing Lyd. *mλwẽn(i)- with Luw. mariyawann(i)- attested only in the collective, we may reconstruct a Proto-Luwic word *mEr-i̯o- + -u̯o- + -énno/i- (< *-é-no-). The root, however, is of unknown origin.
