1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian

‘(something damaging)’1.1.1Transmission
This hapax is attested in a single inscription from Tabal, dating to the late 8th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms
| nom./acc. pl. | /kih(h)ar(ran)ni/ | ki-ha+ra/i-ni | KARABURUN, §12 (Tabal) |
The analysis as a nom./acc. pl. of a neuter noun follows Yakubovich (apud Melchert 2016a:208 n. 21) against Hawkins 2000a:481f., who regards it as dat./loc. sg. However, the verb of the clause at KARABURUN, §12 is probably the transitive HLuw. verb /sa-(i)/ ‘to release’, making a direct object more likely.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of the word is tentative, because the HLuw. spelling leaves some leeway in this respect. Possible shapes besides /kih(h)arni(ya)-/ are e.g. /kih(h)arranni(ya)-/ and /kih(h)arrinni(ya)-/. So far, the word is without etymological links to any of the other Anatolian languages.

1.1.4Meaning
While the exact meaning of this word has yet to be discovered, it undoubtedly denotes something damaging, either concrete or abstract, cf. Melchert 2016a:208, for it occurs in the apodosis of a curse formula, denoting whatever punishment the moon-god is invoked to inflict upon an evildoer. Thus KARABURUN, §12 reads: á-pa-ti-pa-wa/i REX ha+ra/i-na-wa/i-ni-sá (DEUS)LUNA+MI-sá ki-ha+ra/i-ni za+ra/i-ti INFRA sá-tu, approx. /abatti=ppa=wa hantawattis Harranawannis Armas kiharni zarti zanta sattu/, meaning ‘(He who smashes these carvings,) to him, the king (moon-god) Arma of Harran shall then release the kiharni- down (on)to the heart’ (Melchert 2016a:208, cf. Hawkins 2000a:481).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
Mainly unclear. If the analysis of the attested form as a nom./acc. pl. is correct (see discussions above), the word seems to be a stem in /-i(ya)-/, cf. Yakubovich 2015b:6.2.
