1.1.2Forms

unclear /…/ AUDIRE?-wa/i-sà TULEIL 1, l.2 (Amuq)

The analysis of the form attested as TULEIL 1, l.2 is difficult because of the fragmented state of the text, cf. the discussion of the meaning below. It may be a gen. or a nom. sg. c., perhaps even a neuter stem in /-wid-/ may be considered with a nom./acc. sg. in /-wi=sa/. Alternatively, an analysis as a 2sg. impv. act. seems within the realm of possibility, cf. the discussions below.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is unclear. While the logogram (sign *73) is otherwise often combined with the reading aid 〈MI〉 and exclusively found with words from the family around HLuw. /tummanti-(ti)/ ‘to hear’, the syllabic signs following it in the present lexeme suggest a different word.

The choice of 〈sà〉 (*104) over the other signs may indicate a palatalisation to /ʃ/, in which case the ending would most likely be /-wiʃ-/ instead of /-was-/, but the inscription dating quite late means that this orthographic custom was no longer applied reliably (see Rieken 2010b:659).

1.1.4Meaning

The single occurrence of this word appears in the badly fragmented inscription TULEIL 1. It is followed by a string of signs that very much look like the beginning of the next clause, leaving 〈AUDIRE?-wa/i-sà〉 as the final word of the clause, cf. the discussion by Hawkins 2000a:381. If nominal, the form could represent a postposed nom. sg. or a gen., if verbal, the most likely option appears to be a 2sg. impv. act., but the meaning remains entirely obscure.

1.1.5Stem

Unclear. The context of attestation prevents a reliable analysis of the form even regarding its grammatical gender. As a noun, it could have a stem in /-wa-/, /-w(i)-/ with i-mutation, or a neuter abstract in /-w-id-/. If the form represents a verb instead, it could be a stem in /-ssa-(i)/, in the endingless 2sg. impv. act., cf. Sasseville 2021a:489f.

Further data are needed to elucidate the matter.
