1.1.4Meaning
The fragmentary context does not provide any information that could help to elucidate the meaning of antarwīl(i)-. An educated guess regarding its derivational history would start from *an-tra- ‘lower’ (cf. Lyd. ẽntarfλo-), which regularly developed into *antar- and was further derived with the polar suffix -wa(/i)-. Finally, the resulting *antarwa(/i)- underwent another suffixation with -il(i)-; cf. Hitt. ešḫarwil- ‘something of blood-red color’ for a parallel. In analogy with the Hittite formation, antarwīl(i)- should be ‘something in lower position’. However, it must be emphasized that the above analysis remains contextually unsupported and, therefore, very tentative.
