kemi(je)-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

abl./instr. kemijedi TL 44c.44 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The word kemijedi follows the sentence initial particle chain, i.e. me=uwe=kemijedi. Shevoroshkin 2002a:218 n. 14 opens the possibility of seeing an elision, i.e. me=uwe=(e)kemijedi, which is possible, although nothing supports this interpretation.

1.1.4Meaning

Based on the contextual interpretation by Sasseville 2021d, kemijedi is assumed to modify zireimedi waxssadi ‘warm bread (?)’ and would therefore be some kind of attribute to the bread. Shevoroshkin 2011a:33 suggests the meaning ‘pressed/clustered together’ based on a Russian etymology, which must be considered highly tentative. No meaning is assigned here.

1.1.5Stem

The word kemijedi is very likely an adjective in -i(je)- derived from a non-attested noun *keme(/i)-. This same unattested noun could be the derivational base of km͂masa- (with syncope of the root vowel).
